The team behind Alpha-Klima

Financial risk modellers, climate scientists and engineers. We came to climate risk from finance, which is why the analysis ends in financial terms.

Where the work comes from

Alpha-Klima is a spin-off from Arfima Financial Services, which has worked in financial markets and risk modelling since 2012. We moved into physical climate risk in 2022 and brought that background with us. Much of this field came out of climate science; coming from the financial side is what decides how far we take the analysis.

Catastrophe modelling, applied to climate

A great deal of climate risk analysis still stops at the hazard: a flood depth, a wind speed, a score.

The insurance industry has been turning hazards into expected losses for decades. We brought that approach to forward-looking climate scenarios – a vulnerability model for each asset, impacts held as a range of outcomes rather than a single figure, and the dependence between locations kept in, so a portfolio’s worst year reflects one event reaching many sites at once.

Open where it matters

We contribute to OS-Climate’s open-source physical risk stack, principally to physrisk, the calculation engine at its centre, and to the hazard layers it reads. Keeping the foundations open is a practical choice: when a supervisor or an auditor asks how a number was produced, they can inspect the method directly.

The platform goes further, with our own financial engine, vulnerability inventory, portfolio pipelines and datasets. Team members also contribute to OSCAR and carry out joint research with UNED and CEMFI.
