What is climate risk assessment and why is it important for businesses?

Climate risk assessment identifies how climate change can affect assets, operations and financial performance, and quantifies those impacts. It is usually split into physical risk, covering acute events and chronic shifts in the climate, and transition risk, arising from changes in policy, markets and technology. Alpha-Klima works on both, but the platform is built around quantifying physical risk: hazard at each location, a vulnerability model for each asset, and an impact distribution per scenario rather than a single opaque score.

How can Alpha-Klima help my business manage climate risks?

Alpha-Klima connects an asset’s location and its characteristics to hazard, vulnerability and financial models, and reports results both per asset and across a whole portfolio. What tools and platforms does Alpha-Klima use for climate risk management?

The platform is built on OS-Climate’s open-source physical risk stack, principally physrisk, the calculation engine at its centre, and the hazard layers it reads. On top of those sit Alpha-Klima’s own financial engine, vulnerability inventory, portfolio pipelines and datasets. Vulnerability functions come from published academic and institutional research, with internally produced models where published curves fall short. The pan-European wildfire model is one internal model published and validated in the open.

Can Alpha-Klima outputs be used for CSRD and Pillar 3 disclosure?

Alpha-Klima outputs support CSRD and ESRS E1, EU CRR Pillar 3, IFRS S2, Solvency II and EIOPA ORSA and EU Taxonomy work, among others, but software output alone does not establish compliance. The platform records the dataset, scenario, horizon, vulnerability function and aggregation methodology behind results. The required scope, controls and sign-off still depend on the organisation, regulation and reporting context, which is work we scope with you directly.

What is Alpha-Klima's focus and how does it assess climate risk?

Alpha-Klima quantifies the financial consequences of physical climate change at asset and portfolio level. The platform keeps the whole chain – hazard, vulnerability, loss distribution, portfolio aggregation and financial metrics – rather than collapsing it into one score. Annual Average Loss, Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall come off the aggregated portfolio distribution, and each result retains the dataset, scenario, horizon, vulnerability function and aggregation methodology needed for review.

What is the role of OS-Climate in Alpha-Klima's approach?

Alpha-Klima contributes to OS-Climate’s open-source physical risk stack, principally to physrisk, the calculation engine at its centre, and to the hazard layers it reads. Open foundations let a supervisor or an auditor inspect the method directly. The commercial platform builds on them with our own financial engine, vulnerability inventory and climate datasets, and with the workflows and pipelines that automate banking portfolio and regulatory reporting work, alongside support and client-specific workflow development.

How does the platform work for a team?

Analyses belong to your organisation rather than to whoever ran them, so a portfolio one colleague uploads is available to the rest of the team with its results attached. Owners invite members and control access, and usage is metered against a shared allowance so consumption stays predictable. Teams can also reach the same analytics through the API, for automated workflows or for batch processing of large portfolios.

What kind of data sources does Alpha-Klima integrate with?

The platform combines peer-reviewed and institutional climate datasets with selected models produced in house; it does not depend on a single vendor feed. Example sources include: CMIP, ERA, Copernicus, NASA, the EU Joint Research Centre or the World Resources Institute, covering acute and chronic hazards across scenarios and horizons. Each result identifies its dataset, model version, scenario and horizon, so a figure can be traced back to the source behind it.

What is the mission of Alpha-Klima?

Alpha-Klima was founded by finance and quantitative science specialists who kept seeing physical climate risk assessed with tools built for neither finance nor climate science. Our purpose is to make the financial consequences of climate change measurable and defensible: quantify risk at asset and portfolio level, keep results traceable to their data and assumptions, and put them in a form risk, finance and sustainability teams can use. The team is based in Madrid and works with banks, insurers and asset-heavy corporates on international portfolios.

What expertise does the Alpha-Klima team bring?

The team combines climate scientists, econometricians, applied mathematicians, physicists and software engineers, many of whom joined from PhD and postdoctoral research.
