Course: Advanced climate-risk management in the insurance sector
On 20 March 2026, Alpha-Klima and Instituto BME held a six-hour course on climate-risk management for insurance professionals. Participants could attend online or at Instituto BME in Madrid.
The course connected regulatory expectations with quantitative methods and practical application, helping participants carry physical climate risk into insurance business and risk decisions.
Course objective
The objective was to give insurance professionals a clear route from the regulatory framework to materiality assessment, financial-impact metrics and practical use cases.
What the course covered
- Regulatory and supervisory expectations, with a focus on EIOPA guidance, the integration of ESG risks into ORSA and the DGSFP approach.
- Identification and materiality assessment across time horizons, lines of business, and asset- and liability-side exposures.
- Climate data, hazards and vulnerability models, and how they feed risk scores and aggregation metrics.
- Expected loss and Value at Risk as measures of financial impact at asset and portfolio level.
- Practical use cases and a round-table discussion for questions and exchange of experience.
